FAQs

hy are routine dental checkups important?
Routine dental checkups are crucial for maintaining good oral health. They enable your dentist to identify and resolve potential issues early, preventing more serious complications later thus saving the teeth and money. These visits usually include a cleaning to eliminate plaque and tartar buildup, helping to reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease.

What should I expect during my first dental visit?
During your first dental visit, you’ll be greeted by our friendly staff and given the paperworks to fill. The appointment will include a thorough examination of your teeth and gums, an update of your medical history, and X-rays and regular cleaning. We’ll also discuss your dental goals, provide professional cleaning, and address any questions or concerns you may have to develop a personalized treatment plan.

Are Dental X rays safe?
Dental x-rays have one of the lowest radiation exposure rates of all medical imaging. In addition to that, we always do our best to minimize exposure, only performing x-rays when absolutely necessary and always employing protective measures like lead aprons to minimize exposure.

Is fluoride safe?
There has been many misconceptions over fluoride. Yes, fluoride is safe. It has been extensively studied by scientists for over a long period of time and has been proven to help prevent tooth decay without causing harmful health effects. For more information about fluoride, you can visit the ADA’s website: Fluoride and Fluoridation FAQ.

What should I do if I have dental anxiety?

Techniques like deep breathing and listening to calming music can help. We do offer sedation options for patients with severe anxiety. Knowing you’re in a caring environment and having an open conversation can help ease your worries.

Are there specific considerations for pregnant patients?
Yes, there are a few important considerations for pregnant patients when it comes to dental care. It’s generally safe to receive dental treatment during pregnancy, but it’s best to schedule appointments during the second trimester, when discomfort and nausea are typically lower. Make sure to inform us about your pregnancy, as certain medications, X-rays, or treatments may need to be avoided or adjusted. Maintaining good oral hygiene as brushing and flossing regularly during pregnancy is especially important, as hormonal changes can increase the risk of gum disease.

When should my child visit the dentist for the first time?
It’s recommended that your child see a dentist by their first birthday, or within six months after their first tooth appears. This early visit helps ensure their oral health is on track, allows the dentist to check for any potential issues, and provides you with guidance on how to care for their teeth as they grow.

What should I do if a tooth is knocked out?
If you or your child knocks out a tooth (avulsion), carefully rinse the tooth with milk or water (avoiding rubbing or touching the root). Keep the tooth moist by placing it in a glass of milk, water, saliva, or in the person’s mouth if possible until you can be seen. Contact us right away for guidance and to schedule an appointment—the sooner we can see you, the higher the chances of successfully re-implanting the permanent tooth.

Are dental sealants effective?
Yes, dental sealants are highly effective in preventing cavities, especially in children and teens. Adults benefit from them equally. They work by forming a protective barrier over the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where cavities are most likely to develop. Sealants help keep food and bacteria from getting trapped in the grooves of the teeth, reducing the risk of decay.

How can I prevent cavities?
To prevent cavities, it’s essential to maintain a good oral hygiene routine. Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, and use mouthwash to help kill bacteria. Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks, as they can contribute to tooth decay. Regular dental checkups and cleanings are also key to catching potential problems early and keeping your teeth healthy.

Are veneers right for me?
Veneers can be a great option if you’re looking to improve the appearance of your teeth, especially if you have concerns like discoloration, chips, cracks, or slight misalignment. However, not everyone is an ideal candidate. To determine if veneers are the right choice for you, it’s best to consult with us, to assess your oral health and aesthetic goals.

How long do veneers last?
Veneers typically last between 10 to 15 years, depending on factors such as the type of material used, your oral hygiene habits, and lifestyle choices. Porcelain veneers tend to last longer and are more durable compared to composite veneers. With proper care, such as avoiding excessive force (e.g., biting hard objects) and maintaining good oral hygiene, veneers can provide a long-lasting, beautiful smile. Regular dental checkups will help ensure your veneers remain in good condition.

Are veneers covered by dental insurance?
Veneers are typically considered a cosmetic treatment, so most dental insurance plans do not cover them. It’s a good idea to check with your insurance provider to understand your specific coverage. Additionally, our office offers financing options to help make veneers more affordable if insurance does not cover the cost.

Will my teeth be sensitive after veneers?
It’s common to experience some temporary sensitivity after getting veneers, especially to hot or cold temperatures. It typically occurs because a small amount of enamel is removed to make space for the veneers. However, most people find that the sensitivity decreases or disappears within a few days to weeks after the procedure.

Is teeth whitening safe?
Yes, teeth whitening is generally safe when done correctly, whether it’s at home with over-the-counter products or at a dental office. However, it’s important to follow instructions and avoid overuse of whitening products, as excessive whitening can lead to tooth sensitivity or gum irritation.

Will teeth whitening cause sensitivity?

Whitening treatments can temporarily make your teeth more sensitive to hot or cold temperatures. This sensitivity usually fades within a few hours to a day after the treatment

Are there any foods or drinks I should avoid after teeth whitening?
Yes, for the first 48 hours after whitening, it’s best to avoid foods and drinks that can stain your teeth, such as coffee, tea, red wine, berries, and dark sauces. These can cause discoloration while your teeth are more porous and susceptible to staining right after the whitening treatment. Sticking to lighter-colored foods and drinks during this period will help maintain the brightness of your smile for a longer time.

Crowns and bridges typically last between 5 to 15 years, but with proper care, they can sometimes last even longer. The longevity of these restorations depends on factors like the material used (porcelain, metal, or a combination), your oral hygiene habits, and avoiding habits like grinding your teeth or chewing hard objects. Regular dental checkups will help ensure that your crowns and bridges remain in good condition and continue to function well.

How do I care for my Crowns and Bridges?

How do I know if I need a crown or a bridge?
You may need a crown if you have a tooth that is severely damaged, decayed, or weakened. Crowns are used to cover and protect the tooth, restoring its strength, shape, and function. They are also used after a root canal to reinforce the tooth.  A Bridge is recommended if you are missing one or more teeth. It works by anchoring artificial teeth to the adjacent natural teeth or dental implants to “bridge” the gap. Bridges help restore both the function and appearance of your smile. If you’re unsure, it’s best to consult us to assess the condition of your teeth and recommend the most appropriate treatment based on your needs.

If discomfort persists or you have trouble with your dentures, be sure to consult us for further adjustments.

How often should I replace dentures?
Dentures typically need to be replaced every 5 to 7 years, although this can vary depending on factors like wear and tear, changes in your mouth, or damage. How long does it take to heal after an extraction?
Healing time after a tooth extraction typically takes about 1 to 2 weeks for the soft tissues (gums) to heal. However, full healing, including the bone and surrounding tissues, can take several months. In the first few days after the extraction, you may experience swelling, discomfort, and minor bleeding, which should gradually subside.

What are signs of complications after a tooth extraction?

It’s important to check with your dental insurance provider to understand your specific coverage options. Additionally, our office offers financing plans to help manage the cost of implants.

What is the success rate of implants?

Do I need a bone graft before an implant?
A bone graft may be necessary before placing a dental implant if you don’t have enough healthy jawbone to support the implant. This can occur due to bone loss from tooth extraction, gum disease, or other factors. A bone graft helps rebuild the area by adding bone material to the site, allowing for better stability and a higher chance of implant success.

Will deep cleaning weaken my tooth?
No, deep cleaning (also known as scaling and root planing) will not weaken your teeth. In fact, it is an essential procedure for removing plaque and tartar buildup below the gumline, which helps prevent gum disease and tooth decay. Deep cleaning improves the health of your gums and teeth by eliminating harmful bacteria, allowing your gums to reattach to the tooth and promoting better oral health overall. If done correctly by a dental professional, it strengthens the foundation of your teeth and helps maintain their long-term health.

Will insurance cover my deep cleaning?
Many dental insurance plans do provide coverage for deep cleaning, but the extent of coverage and period depends on your specific plan. Typically, insurance may cover the procedure if it is deemed medically necessary due to gum disease or other oral health concerns. It’s best to check with your insurance provider to understand your benefits, and our team can also help verify your coverage and assist you with any questions.

What happens during Deep Cleaning?
The treatment is usually divided into multiple sessions, with each one beginning with the application of a local anesthetic to ensure comfort. Tartar is removed from the pockets around the gums to help fight the infection, and sometimes, medication is applied to eliminate bacteria and promote healing in the affected areas

Most people find that the discomfort is temporary and much less than the pain they experienced before the treatment.

How does Invisalign work?
Invisalign uses a series of clear, custom-made aligners to gradually shift your teeth into the desired position. Each aligner is worn for about 1-2 weeks before being replaced with the next set in the series. The aligners are nearly invisible and can be removed for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing. Throughout your treatment, we will monitor your progress to ensure your teeth are moving as planned. Invisalign is a discreet and comfortable alternative to traditional braces.

Is Invisalign painful?
Invisalign is generally not painful, but you may experience some discomfort when you first start wearing a new aligner or switch to the next one in the series. This is normal and usually lasts only a few days as your teeth begin to shift. The aligners are made of smooth plastic, so they are less likely to irritate your gums and cheeks compared to traditional braces.

How long should I wear my Invisalign per day?
For optimal results, you should wear your Invisalign aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day. The aligners should only be removed for eating, drinking (except water), brushing, and flossing. Consistency is key to ensuring your teeth move as planned and that your treatment stays on schedule.

Does dental insurance cover Invisalign?
Many dental insurance plans offer coverage for Invisalign, but the amount can vary depending on your plan. Some plans may cover Invisalign similarly to how they cover traditional braces, while others may offer partial coverage. It’s a good idea to check with your insurance provider to understand the specifics of your coverage. Our team can also assist with verifying your benefits and helping you explore payment options if needed.
